Chapter 1 - The VanFor years, my family had treated my catering business like a hobby right up until the moment they needed it. Birthdays. Funerals. Baby showers. Retirement dinners. Every single time, someone told me to "just bring something." Every single time, I paid for it out of my own pocket. Every single time, Isabelle posted photos of my food online and called it "family magic," never once mentioning my company's name.

She Thought I Would Cook for Her Wedding Without Being Paid, But the Moment I Removed the Food, My Sister Realized Her Perfect Day Was About to Fall Apart

This time, she'd planned to use me on the biggest day of her life.

I walked outside. Closed the back doors of my van. Locked them.

Isabelle's smile vanished. "What are you doing?"

"Taking my food."

Mom gasped. "Maren, don't you dare."

I climbed into the driver's seat. Isabelle ran after me, her veil flying out behind her.

"Stop!" she screamed. "You can't do this!"

I rolled down the window. "You're right," I said. "I can't cater a wedding for free."

Then I drove away.

Twenty minutes later, my phone exploded with calls and texts. But the first call wasn't from Isabelle. It was the venue manager.

"Maren," he said carefully, "your sister's telling everyone you stole the wedding food. Should I release the security footage?"

I pulled into a parking lot across the street and left the engine running.

"Release it."

He hesitated. "Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Five minutes later, my sister's perfect wedding started unraveling on a projector screen inside the reception hall.

The footage showed me arriving before dawn. Six coolers, each labeled with my catering company's name. It showed Isabelle's fiancé, Marcus, asking my father, "Did you pay her?" — and my father answering, flat and certain, "No. She'll fold once the guests arrive."

Then came the part Isabelle probably wished had never been caught on camera. She was standing near the kitchen doors, laughing with her maid of honor.

"Maren is desperate for family approval. She'll never risk looking selfish."

According to the venue manager, the entire room went dead silent.
