Chapter 1 - Seat 14C

On Our Anniversary, I Secretly Booked a Seat on My Pilot Husband's Flight to Surprise Him—Then His Voice Came Over the Intercom and My Whole Body Went Cold
Grant had never once forgotten an anniversary in eleven years of marriage.
That's exactly why Vivian believed her surprise would turn into one of the sweetest memories of their marriage. Her husband was a commercial pilot, and their entire life had always bent itself around flight schedules, delays, last-minute reassignments. Birthdays moved around all the time. Holidays waited. But their anniversary — their anniversary had always stayed protected, untouchable, sacred in a way nothing else in their calendar was.
So when Grant told her he'd been assigned a short evening flight on their exact anniversary date, he looked genuinely wrecked about it.
"I tried everything to switch it," he said. "I hate that I won't be with you tonight, of all nights."
Vivian smiled and let herself look disappointed on the outside. Inside, an idea was already taking shape.
That night, after Grant fell asleep beside her, she quietly bought a ticket for the exact same flight.
She pictured his face the moment he saw her waiting after they landed. She'd wear the red dress he loved, surprise him right there at the gate, and the two of them would still get their anniversary after all, just a different version of it.
The next morning she curled her hair, did her makeup carefully, and slipped into the dress. At the airport, she spotted Grant near the gate already in uniform, and ducked behind a pillar before he could catch sight of her.
She boarded near the very end of the line, took her seat in 14C, and kept her face angled down the whole time.
Then the plane pulled back from the gate.
Grant's voice came through the cabin speakers. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain…"
Vivian smiled, waiting for the standard safety announcement.
But Grant paused instead. "Before we take off, I want to say something to someone very special on this plane tonight."
Vivian's heart jumped. For one wild second she thought he'd somehow discovered her surprise already.
Then he kept going. "To the beautiful woman in 15C… you mean everything to me. I don't want to hide how I feel anymore. Soon, we won't have to."
The cabin broke into scattered applause.
Vivian froze completely.

She was not sitting in 15C.
And Grant was not talking to his wife.
