Chapter 6 - The Comment That Cracked It Open
The story leaked fast — funerals are full of witnesses, and horror travels quickest of all when it arrives dressed in mourning clothes. By the next morning, there were already calls, messages, rumors, one phrase repeated by too many people: they're saying the little girl said something at the wake.
But the real turning point came two days later, in the comments under a video a distant relative had posted of the service before everything unraveled — just the flowers, the tiny coffins, organ music playing underneath. Most of the comments were grief, horror, morbid curiosity, outrage.
Then one appeared from an account with no profile photo, a name I didn't recognize.
Check into Miriam's other grandchildren. This isn't the first time she's used "calming powder" on a baby in that family.
I felt a new kind of cold — different even from the funeral, because that single sentence opened a well far older and deeper than I'd thought I could bear.
I showed it to the police. That one line changed the entire direction of the investigation.
They started reviewing old family history. Two poorly explained infant deaths from decades earlier, further out on the extended family tree. A "crib accident" involving one of Miriam's nephews that people had always whispered about, in that unlucky tone families use when the truth sounds too obscene to say out loud. A cousin of Trevor's who'd spent weeks hospitalized as an infant and had always been described, simply, as "delicate from birth."

I'm not saying everything became clear all at once. It didn't. But Miriam stopped being just the monstrous mother-in-law of one story and started looking like something much worse — a woman who had spent decades quietly deciding which children deserved to keep getting in the way of her idea of family order.
Some people like that don't kill out of rage. They kill for hierarchy. For control. Out of a sick certainty that they alone know who's ruining everyone else's lives.
