Chapter 3 - The Witness in the Hallway

Ethan told me the whole thing that night, at the kitchen table, while I stirred a pot of sauce and pretended I wasn't holding my breath.

The boy at the lockers was named Caleb. Not Brandon — Caleb. One of the quiet ones. Ethan had barely mentioned him all last year.

Caleb had been standing right there when Brandon leaned in and said the thing under his breath.

"What did he say?" I asked.

Ethan looked down at his hands. "He said, 'Doesn't matter how you look now. You're still nothing.'"

I set the spoon down on the counter. "And then?"

"Caleb turned around," Ethan said. "He looked straight at Brandon and said, 'Say that again.'"

I hadn't expected that. "Caleb stood up for you?"

"He barely knows me," Ethan said. "That's the part I can't stop thinking about."

Brandon had tried to laugh it off first, the way guys like Brandon always do when someone catches them flat. He glanced around for his friends to back him up. But the hallway had gone quiet in that specific way — everybody watching, nobody wanting to get caught watching.

"Brandon said something like, 'Chill, man, I'm just messing around,'" Ethan went on. "And Caleb said, 'No, you're not. And everybody standing here knows it.'"

I pulled out the chair across from him and sat.

"What did the rest of them do?"

"Nothing." Ethan almost smiled. "That was the whole thing. They just stood there. And Madison —" He stopped.

"Madison," I said carefully. The girl. The one who got the gift he spent two hours picking out.

"She looked at Brandon like she was embarrassed to be standing next to him." Ethan shook his head slowly. "A year ago she was laughing right along with him. This morning she looked at him like he was the problem."

I didn't say anything. I let him sit with it.

"How did it end?" I finally asked.

"Caleb walked me to first period," he said. "We talked the whole way. He told me he saw what they did to me last year." Ethan paused. "He apologized. For not saying something sooner."

My throat went tight. "He apologized to you."

"Yeah." Ethan looked up. "I honestly didn't know what to do with that."

I reached across the table and put my hand over his. We sat like that for a minute. Behind me the sauce was popping and spitting on the burner and I didn't get up.

Then Ethan said something I wasn't ready for.

"Mom. Madison texted me."

I pulled my hand back slowly. "When?"

"About an hour after school. She got my number from somebody." He set his phone on the table between us, screen up. "She wants to talk."

I looked at the phone. Then at my son. "What do you want to do?"

May you like

He didn't answer right away. He stared at the phone like it was a question he hadn't finished reading.

"I don't know," he said. "That's the problem."
