Chapter 4 - The Knock

The door opened before Derek could get a word out.

Detective Carla Ortega stepped in wearing a navy suit with a badge clipped at her hip and a file tucked under one arm. She wasn't a big woman. She didn't need to be. Whatever weight she carried came from being absolutely certain.

"Evening," she said. "Financial crimes. Nobody leaves just yet."

Derek jerked back so hard his chair legs scraped. Gerald Vance came halfway out of his seat. Bethany went the color of the tablecloth. Gary Hoyt actually sputtered, "What the hell is this?"

I reached into my coat pocket, set my phone on the table between us, and turned it face up.

The little red light was still recording.

Carla didn't waste breath. "Mrs. Caldwell contacted my office after a line-of-credit application was filed against her cabin using a forged signature, and after somebody started making unusual inquiries into her business accounts. She wanted to know whether tonight was real concern or asset coercion."

Then she tapped the screen.

Derek's own voice came out of the speaker, loud in that small room.

Sign, Mom, or we'll ruin you.

Nobody moved.

Carla laid a page down next to Vance's tidy stack. "This is the credit application submitted six weeks ago in Mrs. Caldwell's name, with a forged signature."

Derek stared at it and said nothing.

She set down a second page. "This is a demand notice from a lender on a commercial loan that comes due Monday morning."

A third. "This is the personal guarantee signed by Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt."

Gary made a sound like he'd been punched.

A fourth. "And this is a draft collateral schedule listing properties that none of you own."

"Derek," Bethany whispered.

"Not now," he said, without looking at her.

Carla's voice never lifted. "Maybe you can explain why the emergency conservatorship packet was already drafted before this dinner started. Or why the transfer documents hand you sole control of every operating asset. Or why you told your lender you had three laundromats, a house, and a paid-off cabin to put up."

Gerald Vance finally spoke. "Detective, I was told this was voluntary estate planning."

"Then you'll want your own attorney," she said.

Derek shot up out of his chair, knocking it over behind him. "This is a family matter. You called the police on your own son?"

I stood too.

"No," I said. "I called someone after my son tried to steal my life."

His face came apart. "You were going to leave it all to me anyway!"

That was the first honest thing he'd said all night.

The room went dead quiet.

I looked at him and, for one flicker, I saw the kid who used to sit on a folding chair in the laundromat office eating vending-machine crackers while I counted the till. But that boy was buried now under the man who'd just promised to torch my business, my name, and my independence if I didn't obey him on command.

"Leave it to you," I said. "Not hand it over at a table because you made promises you couldn't cover."

His shoulders shook. "You never trusted me with anything that mattered."

"Because every single time I helped you," I said, "you treated help like it made you the owner."

Bethany started to cry then — not over me. Over the fact that she'd finally seen her husband's plan for what it was: desperation dressed up as entitlement. Gary sank down in his seat and aged ten years in front of me. Paula stared at her daughter with shame and horror fighting for space on her face.

Carla stepped aside and opened the door again. Two uniformed deputies came in.

That's when the room really came apart.

Derek talked over everybody — it was just pressure, the paperwork was temporary, nobody was actually going to file anything if I'd just signed. Gary blamed Derek for dragging them into it. Bethany blamed her father for pushing Derek to find collateral in the first place. Gerald Vance kept repeating that he'd drafted everything based on what his client told him and knew nothing about a forgery.

Every one of them scrambled to save themselves.

Which fit. Not one of them had come to that room to save me.
