Chapter 5 - Twenty-Five Missed Calls

Twenty-five missed calls were waiting for me the next morning. Every one of them from Trevor.

One voicemail.

I made coffee first. I stood at the kitchen window. A cardinal dropped down onto the fence post, looked at me for a second, and flew off. I watched the empty spot where it had been.

Then I played the message.

Trevor's voice had none of the looseness from the night before. It was tight and thin and scared.

"Mom, please call me. The mortgage payment bounced. The school payment didn't go through. My business account's showing a shortfall. Camille's — please, just call me back. What did you do? Please."

I listened to it once.

Then I finished my coffee.

Three texts came in over the course of the day. The first was from Camille. Not an apology — a demand dressed up as a question.

Why would you do this on Christmas? This affects the children.

The second was from Trevor, asking me to please pick up.

The third came late in the afternoon from a number I didn't know, which turned out to belong to Camille's mother. She'd apparently been told enough to have an opinion, but not enough to know that I already knew exactly where some of my money had been landing.

I didn't answer any of them.

I forwarded the unknown number to Diane.

She worked straight through the holiday weekend. By January 3rd she had drafted a formal letter of financial accounting — every transfer I'd made over fourteen years, the total, the stated purpose of each one, and the legal description of those funds. In a separate addendum she laid out the irregularities in the emergency fund, with the documentation attached.

It went out by certified mail to Trevor and Camille's address on January 5th.

It wasn't a threat to sue.

It was something more effective than a threat. It was a record. Dated, precise, and signed by a lawyer. It said, in that careful language these documents use: this happened. This money changed hands. And we have proof of where some of it went that you probably didn't expect us to find.

Trevor called within two hours of the delivery confirmation.

I didn't answer.

He called four more times that day. I didn't answer those either.
