Chapter 3 - What Weston LearnedWeston confronted Bianca in the parking lot before they'd even left for their honeymoon. He told me later that he'd had no idea about the catering, no idea about the venue, no idea that I'd quietly kept both of those costs off his radar entirely because I didn't want him worrying about money on what was supposed to be the happiest week of his life.

"She told you to disappear," he said to me at my kitchen table, still in disbelief. "And you paid for half the party anyway."
"I paid for it because it was for you," I said. "Not for her mother, not for the guest list, not to prove a point. For you."
"She humiliated you."
"She embarrassed herself," I said. "I just happened to be in the room when it caught up with her."
He was quiet for a long time. Then he asked the question I'd been waiting for. "Why didn't you just tell me what she said? Before the wedding?"
May you like
"Because it wasn't my job to make you choose between us three days before your wedding," I told him. "That's not the kind of mother I wanted to be. But it also wasn't my job to let her rewrite thirty-one years of my life into something to be ashamed of. So I let the truth speak for itself, and I let you find out on your own time, in your own way."
Weston didn't say much else that afternoon. He hugged me for a long time before he left, longer than he had in years.
