Chapter 3 - The TerminalAfter we landed, we waited until most of the passengers had cleared out. I had no idea what I was going to say to Nathan. I only knew I wasn't leaving that airport without looking him in the face.

We walked into the terminal. And then I saw him.

Nathan was standing near the entrance to an airline lounge. Beside him was Camille — nothing like the crying woman who'd shown up at my house six months earlier. Her hair was perfectly styled, her clothes looked expensive, and there was no hiding the fact that she was visibly pregnant, one hand resting on her stomach, smiling up at Nathan.

Then she saw us. Her smile changed.

Nathan followed her gaze. The color drained straight out of his face.

"Talia?"

That was the first thing my husband said to me.

Owen started crying again. "Dad, what's going on?"

Nathan stepped forward. "What are you doing on this flight?"

I almost laughed. "We came to surprise you."

He closed his eyes. Camille didn't look embarrassed — if anything, she looked relieved.

I pointed at her. "Isn't this the same Camille who showed up at my house crying six months ago?"

Nathan glanced around, nervous. "Can we not do this here?"

"You told me she was your coworker."

"Talia, this isn't the place."

"You just announced to an airplane full of strangers that she's pregnant with your child and that you're planning to marry her." I stepped closer. "You don't get to suddenly want privacy."

Camille crossed her arms. "At least she knows now."

I turned to her. "What did you say?"

She met my eyes without flinching. "I said at least you know."

There was nothing left of the frightened woman who'd stood crying on my porch.

Nathan moved between us. "You need to leave."

"Move, Nathan."

"Talia — Owen is standing right there. Think about him before you make a scene."

I laughed, bitter. "Now you're worried about what Owen sees?"

His face tightened. Our son gripped my hand harder. Nathan looked down at him. "Buddy, I can explain. Just — not right now."

Owen stepped behind me. Something shifted in Nathan's expression. I didn't care.

"How long?" I asked.

He looked at Camille, then back at me. "Almost a year."

My stomach turned. "When were you planning to tell me?"

He rubbed his forehead. "I was waiting for the right time."

"The right time to tell your wife another woman is pregnant with your child?"

"No." He hesitated. "The right time to give you the papers."

I stared at him. "What papers?"

"The divorce papers."

Behind me, Owen was crying harder. Nathan's expression changed — like he'd genuinely forgotten, for a second, that his own son could hear every word.

I crouched down beside Owen immediately. "Put your headphones on, sweetheart."

"I don't want to."

"Please."

He started sobbing. I hugged him, then stood back up.

"You were planning to serve me divorce papers?"

"I didn't want you finding out like this."

"How exactly did you want me to find out?"

"I wanted us to talk privately."

Camille cut in. "Nathan and I love each other. We're having a baby. He wants to be with me. Dragging this out isn't helping anyone."

I looked at him. "Is that what you think?"

He didn't answer right away. Then he nodded. "Our marriage has been over for a while."

That was news to me. We'd eaten dinner together Thursday. Watched a movie in bed Friday. He'd kissed me goodbye that very morning. Apparently my marriage had ended and nobody had thought to mention it to me.

"We can still be good parents to Owen," Nathan said.

Our son heard his name. He looked up. "You're leaving us?"

Nathan stepped toward him. "Owen—"

Our son backed away. "Don't touch me."

Nathan froze.

That was when I knew we had to leave. I picked up our bags. "We're going home."

May you like

"Please let me explain things to him."

"You already did."
