My Sister Said My Teenage Daughter Kept Wrecking Our Vacation Pictures — Then My Ten-Year-Old Showed Everyone What She'd Really Been Doing

Chapter 1 - Those Stains Are in Every Picture
"Those stains are in every picture, Diane."
My sister slid her phone across the dinner table and spread her fingers on the screen, blowing up a photo of my sixteen-year-old on the beach.
Josie had been mid-laugh when I took that picture.
Now she looked at it like Carla had reached across the table and slapped her.
"If you know your skin looks like that," Carla said, "why would you put on something that shows it all off?"
My chair cracked against the wall behind me. "Put the phone down. Now."
Carla didn't even glance my way. "People zoom in, Diane. They ask what's wrong with her. I can't put up one family picture without somebody noticing."
"That's enough."
Across the table, Josie clamped a hand over her mouth. A sob leaked through her fingers anyway.
My ten-year-old, Eli, was sitting beside her with both hands wrapped around the camera he'd hauled around the entire vacation.
He stood up.
He set the camera down in the middle of the table and looked straight at his aunt.
"At least Josie's marks are on the outside," he said. "Yours are showing right now."
Carla's face drained to the color of the tablecloth.
Then, quieter, he added, "And you've been cutting her out of pictures since she was nine."
Carla reached for her bag.
I got to the door first.
"Sit down."
She didn't move.

"Carla. Sit down."
To understand why my sister suddenly looked scared, you need to know what she'd been doing to my daughter for years — and how long it took me to let myself see it.
