Chapter 2 - One Word in the Bloodwork

Two hours later, the ER doctor came back holding Hannah's chart and shut the door behind him.

"Your sister is severely dehydrated," he said. "Her potassium is dangerously low. And there's something else."

He looked right at Hannah.

"There's a prescription medication in your bloodstream that isn't anywhere in your records. Nobody prescribed it to you."

That should have been the worst part of the night.

It wasn't.

Hannah stared at him like he'd switched to another language. "What medication?"

"A strong prescription diuretic. It flushes fluid and electrolytes out of the body fast. We're running a second test to confirm, but this isn't something you'd get by accident."

"I don't take anything," Hannah said. "Prenatal vitamins. That's it."

I reached into my purse and set the container on the tray table.

"I took this off her dinner plate an hour ago."

The doctor's face changed instantly. Within minutes a nurse had the container sealed inside a plastic evidence bag, labeled and initialed.

Because Hannah was pregnant, and because the doctor believed the exposure might not be an accident, hospital security called the police. Obstetrics wheeled her upstairs for fetal monitoring.

The baby's heartbeat came through strong and even. But the ultrasound tech went quiet, and then the OB came in and sat down.

The baby was measuring small.

Not an emergency yet, she said carefully. But small enough that the weeks of dehydration and missed meals were already showing up on the screen.

Hannah put both hands over her face and sobbed.

Our parents got there twenty minutes later. Mom wrapped Hannah in her arms and whispered, "Baby, why didn't you call me?"

Hannah looked ashamed. "Derek kept telling me I was blowing it out of proportion. Carol said every woman in their family got sick like this when they were pregnant. I thought I was being weak."

I sat on the edge of the bed. "Who cooks your food, Hannah?"

She didn't answer right away.

May you like

"Carol," she finally said. "Almost every meal."

That's when Detective Monica Reyes knocked and stepped inside.
