Chapter 1 - The ComplaintOur hot tub had been sitting covered and almost untouched for nearly four months when our neighbor, Priya, appeared at the front door and asked us to keep the noise down.

My Neighbors Secretly Used My Hot Tub for a Year, So I Taught Them a Lesson

At first, I thought I had misunderstood her.

My husband, Desmond, and I hadn't even been home the previous Sunday. We had driven three hours away to visit his parents for the weekend. So there had been no music coming from our backyard. No people laughing. No late-night gathering. Nothing.

"Are you sure it was coming from our house?" I asked.

Priya hesitated. "I mean, it sounded like it was coming from this direction. Loud music, people talking… Honestly, Whitney, it's been happening for months. Maybe close to a year. I didn't want to complain, but it's getting frustrating."

Nearly a year?

I thanked her for letting me know and slowly closed the door. Then I stood alone in the hallway trying to understand how our backyard could have been noisy while we weren't even home.

Desmond and I had bought the house four years earlier after months of searching. The backyard was what convinced us — spacious, lined with mature trees, with a beautiful hot tub the previous owners had installed. The first two years, we used it constantly. Friday nights. Quiet evenings after stressful days. Sometimes we sat outside after dinner with a bottle of wine between us.

Then life got busier. I took a job that required travel roughly two weekends a month. One of Desmond's coworkers went on extended medical leave, leaving him with an enormous workload. By the time he got home each evening, even relaxing felt like something else on the schedule. We kept telling ourselves we'd start using the hot tub again once things calmed down.

They never did. So it stayed covered.

At least, that's what we thought.

After Priya's visit, one question wouldn't leave my mind. If we hadn't been using it… who had?

Chapter 2 - The CameraThe following weekend, Desmond installed a camera. It wasn't obvious — he mounted a small unit beneath the garage overhang where it had a clear view of both the hot tub and the gate leading from our backyard into the alley. The gate had been installed by the previous owners for deliveries, with just a simple latch that opened from either side. We'd never considered it a security problem.
Chapter 3 - The Green DyeWe considered confronting Byron and Priya immediately — we had video evidence, we could walk next door and demand an explanation. But I knew exactly what would happen. They'd apologize, say they thought we wouldn't mind, claim it started innocently, and within a few uncomfortable weeks we'd be back to waving politely across the driveway.
Chapter 4 - Whose WaterWe walked into the backyard. Byron turned when he heard us — his expression almost impossible to describe. Standing in our yard, tinted green, unable to leave through the gate, trying to decide whether to be angry or embarrassed.
Chapter 5 - The ListingThat evening, I posted a short message in our neighborhood watch group — not footage of them in the hot tub, since that felt unnecessarily humiliating, but footage of them entering our yard through the gate, with a simple explanation that we'd discovered people repeatedly accessing our property without permission.
Chapter 6 - Detective HartleyI went home and documented everything — screenshots of the listing, guest reviews, dates, photographs, camera footage. Now that I knew what I was looking for, I realized some of the people on camera weren't Byron's friends or relatives. They were rental guests.
Chapter 7 - Whose PermissionFour weeks later, Byron and Priya put their house on the market. Within days, there was a pending-sale sign outside. They moved out in late November — a moving truck arriving early Saturday morning, boxes disappearing into it, cars packed fast, clearly wanting the whole process over with as quickly as possible.
