Chapter 2 - The SUVs in the Driveway

Their arrogance shattered at eight in the morning on a Tuesday.

Four matte-black armored SUVs boxed Desmond's car into the driveway. The heavy oak front doors swung open, and four corporate attorneys, flanked by armed federal marshals, marched straight into the grand foyer.

Desmond rushed in from the kitchen in a silk robe, stammering. "Who — who are you? This is private property! I'm calling the police!"

The lead attorney dropped a thick, heavily stamped legal dossier onto the marble console table with a crack that echoed through the foyer.

"We represent Vance Holdings, collecting on a five-million-dollar corporate lien attached directly to this property's deed."

The blood drained from Desmond's face. "What lien? My lawyers verified the title was completely clear!"

"Wren's grandfather, Sterling Vance, instituted a dormant poison-pill covenant on this property twenty years ago," the attorney said, flat and merciless. "The estate remained debt-free only so long as it was held by a biological blood descendant. The instant you demanded and accepted the deed as an outside party, you personally triggered full liability for the entire five million dollars."

Desmond's phone buzzed violently in his pocket. He pulled it out, opened his banking app, and stared in horror at a blinking red alert: ALL ACCOUNTS FROZEN PENDING CORPORATE SEIZURE.

A federal marshal stepped forward and handed him an eviction notice. "You have until five p.m. today to pay five million dollars in full, or face immediate foreclosure and criminal trespassing charges."
