Chapter 4 - The Videos

Grant started making calls the next morning.

He wouldn't say much. "Just checking on something." For four days he worked the phone — cousins, college friends, anybody who'd had a camera out during the reception.

I didn't understand what he was building until Wednesday night, when he sat down next to me on the couch with his laptop open.

"I've got three."

"Three what?"

"Angles." He turned the screen toward me. "Videos."

The first one was from Tyler, Bethany's boyfriend, who'd been filming us work the room. Diane was in the background. Not close, at first. Then she moved toward me. The camera caught her look down at my skirt. It caught her move the wineglass from her right hand to her left. Then a small step sideways, and her forearm just — tilted. The wine came straight down the front of me.

No stumble. No lurch. Nothing caught her heel.

Grant played the second one. Same thing from the side. Then the third, the clearest one, and in that one you can see her drop her eyes to the glass in her hand a full second before she pours it.

"Wow," I said.

Grant leaned back into the cushions. "Still think I overreacted all those years?"

"I never thought that."

He dragged both hands down his face. "I kept telling myself she just hated not being in control."

"That's probably part of it."

"I should've shut it down before the wedding." He closed the laptop. "Friday morning, dress like you've got a business meeting."

"Why Friday?"

"My mother has the Meridian presentation."

I knew the name instantly. Diane was a senior account director at a marketing firm downtown called Brandt & Ellis, and for months she had talked about Meridian Health Partners more than she'd talked about our wedding. A career contract. She was running the pitch herself.

"What are we going to do there?" I asked.

He didn't smile. "Give her the chance to tell the truth in front of people who matter."
