Chapter 6 - The Line Adam Drew

Milo froze mid-step.

"Don't throw her away, and don't hide her either," Adam said, gentler now, but his eyes were locked on his mother. "You never have to hide anything in this house again. Not ever."

He turned to face Diane fully, and something in the way he stood had changed. He wasn't the boy she could steer anymore.

"Milo stays. The doll stays." His voice didn't shake. "You're the one who's leaving, Mom. I'll help you pack tonight."

Diane's face went a deep, blotchy red.

"You would choose a plastic toy over your own mother?"

"I'm choosing my son."

She snatched her purse off the counter, hands trembling with fury.

"Fine. Send me away. But don't think for one second this ends here. I will tell every single person in this family exactly what happened. I'll tell them my own son threw his mother out into the street. We'll see how they look at you then."

Adam didn't flinch.

"Tell them," he said. "Tell all of it. Every single word."

Diane stared at him for a long, brittle moment. Then she turned and went upstairs to pack.
