Chapter 4 - The Bathroom

My best friend Alicia pulled me into the restroom and locked the door behind us, turning me toward the mirror. My hair ended unevenly around my neck. Two crushed flowers still clung near one ear. I pulled them free.
"I want to go home," I said.
Alicia picked up my bag. "If that's what you want, I'll get my car."
I stared at my reflection. Outside were my parents, our friends, our food, our music, and the man I'd just married an hour earlier. Denise had already decided what happened to my hair. I wasn't about to let her decide when and how the rest of my wedding ended too.
"No, wait," I said. Alicia stopped. "I want her gone."
"Then tell her, Vera. Make her leave."
Before we could walk out, Owen appeared in the doorway. He looked at my hair and went pale. "I hated leaving you after that."
"Then why did you?"
"Because Sabrina was already nearby, waiting on my call."
I stared at him. "What? You left me right after seeing what your mother did — and went to her?"
"She called me last week, love. Mom asked her to come tonight and make you uncomfortable."
My stomach tightened. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you kept asking me to keep the peace, and I thought hearing the truth from Sabrina's own mouth might finally get Mom to stop."
He stepped closer. "Sabrina was supposed to come in later, once things had calmed down. Then Mom cut your hair instead."
"Does she know you're bringing her in now?"
"Yes. She's ready."
That mattered. He took a breath. "If you don't want her here at all, I'll send her home right now."
I looked at Alicia, then back at Owen. "Tell me exactly what Sabrina knows."

His jaw tightened. "Enough to prove Mom invented almost all of this out of thin air."
I opened the bathroom door. "Then bring her in."
