Chapter 7 - The Girl Who Hadn't Eaten

The office went quiet. Then someone knocked. A young woman stood in the doorway, pale, visibly shaking.
"Nathan, I'm sorry — I don't have an appointment, but my interview got moved to tomorrow."
He stood immediately and started toward her. I noticed her hands trembling before he did.
"Have you eaten?" I asked.
She blinked. "What?"
"When did you last eat something?"
Her face went red. "Yesterday morning."
Nathan stopped short. He hadn't noticed. I went to the staff kitchen, found crackers and a bit of fruit, and set them down in front of her.
"Interviewers are scary enough without meeting them on an empty stomach."
She gave a weak laugh.
Later, after Nathan helped clean up her résumé, she stood in front of the mirror. "I still don't feel ready."
He opened his mouth. I spoke first.
"Then go scared."
She turned to me. "What?"
"You don't have to stop being frightened before you're allowed to start."
