Chapter 3 - The RobeThe next morning, I came downstairs. Julian was sitting at the kitchen island. His parents, Harold and Fiona, were in the living room packing my belongings into moving boxes and trash bags. Fiona was holding the silver-framed photograph of my grandmother. Books had been pulled from my shelves. A ceramic bowl my mother had brought from Taiwan was being wrapped in newspaper.

And then I saw Simone. Standing in my kitchen, wearing my emerald-green silk robe, drinking coffee out of my favorite mug.
I looked around the room. Oddly, I didn't panic. I felt calm — because this was almost exactly the scene I'd expected.
Julian pushed an envelope toward me. "Sign."
Divorce papers. I opened the envelope.
"You're useless to me now," Julian said. "The debt is gone. Take whatever things are left and get out."
Fiona started saying something about family legacy. Simone told me not to make a scene. It was obvious they'd planned this — the boxes, the timing, Simone in my robe. They'd rehearsed their little victory.
Unfortunately for them, they'd made one enormous mistake. They didn't actually understand the woman they were trying to humiliate.
I looked at Simone. "First, take off my robe."
She smirked.
Then I looked at Julian. "And then all of you need to leave."
He laughed. "This is my house."
"No," I said calmly. "It isn't."
The laughter stopped. Julian stared at me. "Vivian, read the room. The papers are right there. Sign them, take what we allow you to take, and leave quietly."
I walked toward the island. "This house has been solely in my name since the 2016 refinance. You signed the transfer documents yourself at First National Title."
His expression changed. Fiona slowly set my grandmother's photograph down.

"I have copies," I continued. "Priscilla has copies. And the county recorder has copies." Julian said nothing. Simone looked at him.
"That's the first problem," I said. "Now let's discuss the second."
