Chapter 1 - The Gift He Brought His Mother"Today you stop being my wife, and I want every single person here to witness it."

Marcus Reid announced that at his mother's seventy-fifth birthday party, in front of well over a hundred guests at an exclusive country club outside Boston.

I was standing beside his mother, Margaret, straightening the cardigan over her shoulders while the waitstaff circled with trays of champagne. Marcus had been missing from the room for almost an hour.

I already knew exactly why.

Three days earlier, I'd found a burner phone shoved into the back of his study desk drawer. Inside were photos, messages, bank transfers, and a video of a three-year-old boy running toward Marcus, arms wide, shrieking one word.

"Daddy!"

Ten years of marriage, collapsed onto a five-inch screen.

Still, I hadn't said a word to anyone. I wanted to talk to a divorce attorney first, and more than that, I wanted to protect our ten-year-old son, Nathaniel. Nate had been born with serious respiratory problems and had spent more of his childhood in specialty clinics than on any baseball field. Marcus and Margaret had always quietly treated that as some kind of defect.

Margaret liked to say the Reid family needed "strong men."

Then the ballroom doors swung open.

Marcus walked in beside a young woman named Selena, dressed head to toe in red. Between them walked the little boy from the video.

The entire room went silent.

"Mom." Marcus wore a triumphant smile like he'd just won something. "I brought you the gift you've always wanted."

He rested a hand on the boy's shoulder.

"This is Milo. My son."

Margaret went white. I waited for outrage. I had been her "daughter" for ten years. I'd sat beside her through medical appointments, organized every family event she cared about, protected this family's public image at every turn, and swallowed her cold little remarks for a decade without complaint.

Instead, she opened her arms.

"My grandson. My precious boy."

She looked at Milo with a warmth I had never once, in ten years, seen her direct at Nate.

Then Marcus turned to face me.

"Selena and I are going to be together. You couldn't give me another child, and my mother deserves a real grandson to carry this family's name forward. Be reasonable about this. Sign the papers, pack your things, and don't cause a scene over the house or the company stock."

Dozens of people were staring at me now. An aunt whispered that Marcus "needed an heir." A cousin murmured that I should just accept reality with some dignity.

I opened my mouth.

Before a single word came out, Nate stood up.

He walked straight up onto the stage, picked up the microphone off its stand, and looked directly at Selena.

"I just want to say thank you," he said, his voice ringing clear across the whole ballroom, "for taking my dad off our hands. As of tonight, he's officially your problem."

Gasps rippled through the crowd, followed by a wave of nervous laughter.

"Nate!" Marcus barked.

My son didn't put the microphone down. He reached into his blazer pocket and pulled out a small black USB drive, holding it up so the whole room could see it.

"And my mom isn't leaving here with nothing," Nate continued, "because I copied everything off Dad's secret phone."

For the first time all night, Marcus's smile disappeared completely.

Then Nate said there was something on that drive that even I hadn't seen yet.
