Chapter 1 - Seat 7C

My husband booked seats 7A and 7B to disappear with another woman, but he forgot that after twelve years I could read every lie on his face before he finished saying it. When he looked up and asked, voice shaking, "What are you doing here?" — I held up my boarding pass for 7C and said one word: "Traveling." What he had no idea about was the attorney already digging through a transfer that was about to end him.

"Every drop of color drained from his face instantly.

"Sophie?! What — what are you doing here?"

I held my boarding pass between two fingers, my voice level as still water. "I believe my seat's right next to yours."

His eyes shot to 7B, still empty. Still waiting.

A moment later, a stylish young woman appeared in the aisle behind me, entirely unaware whose row she was about to step into.

"Excuse me," she said sweetly. "I think that's my seat."

I stepped aside. Whatever calm settled over my face in that moment must have looked strange, because Derek froze like he'd seen a ghost.

"Of course," I said. "Please. I think it's about time the three of us finally got acquainted."
