Chapter 2 - The Name He Never Expected Me to Know

I looked up at him slowly.
One baby was still crying. Another had passed out against my arm. I hadn't shifted an inch.
"Stop what, exactly?" I said.
His jaw went tight.
"You know exactly what you did."
"I booked a trip with my own savings," I said. "Same as you asked me to."
"The card," he snapped. "You killed the card."
I hadn't said a word to anyone. I hadn't made a single call from that plane.
But three days earlier I'd set something up — quietly, carefully — after I found the first charge I didn't recognize.
A hotel booking. Two names on the reservation.
His.
And one that wasn't mine.
I looked back down at my phone.
"Grant," I said. "Who is Bethany?"
Every bit of color left his face.
Around us, a few passengers had gone very still.
He grabbed the armrest and leaned in.
"Keep your voice down," he hissed.
"I'm perfectly calm," I said. "Are you?"
His mouth opened. Then closed. Then opened again with nothing in it.
A flight attendant appeared at his shoulder.
"Sir," she said quietly. "You need to return to your seat. And you should know — this conversation has been clearly audible from row three back."
Grant turned around.
And that's when I saw her.
May you like
A woman. Three rows behind us. Staring straight at him.
Her face had gone completely white.
