Chapter 2 - The Reports That DisappearedThe woman's name was Paige Wallace.
She told state investigators that Cole had attacked her years earlier, right after she tried to end things between them. She'd reported it the very next morning, walked into that station shaking and certain she was doing the right thing.
Deputy Rourke had told her to "think carefully" before she went and ruined a man's future over one bad night.
When she refused to back down, he closed the file anyway. Quietly. Like it had never existed at all.
Two more women came forward once word got around that Dana had survived. One had hospital records going back years. The other had photographs, and messages where Cole warned her outright that his friends would make any report she filed simply vanish.
State investigators pulled warrants for Cole's phone, his financial accounts, and a lake cabin registered under his name. Inside all of it, they found an illegal betting operation, high-interest loans handed out to desperate people, and a steady trail of cash payments running straight to Rourke.
But the piece that mattered most came from inside Dana's own kitchen.
A voice-activated speaker on the counter had automatically saved part of the argument that night. Cole's voice, demanding money, accusing Dana of planning to leave and take Nora with her. Then his voice went cold in a way that made my skin crawl the first time I heard it played back.
"Dale buried the others. He'll bury this one too."
The recording ran straight through the assault and Cole slamming out the door.
Rourke was suspended within the week. The state police took full control of the case. Dana was granted a long-term protective order, temporary primary custody of Nora, and exclusive say over every medical decision for her newborn son.
Then investigators recovered a set of deleted messages between Cole and an associate of his named Silas.
Cole knew Dana was planning to testify. He'd written that the only way to stop her was to take Nora somewhere no one could find her, and keep her there until Dana changed her statement.
The messages included Nora's school route. A photograph of her backpack. A forged pickup authorization with Dana's name signed at the bottom in a hand that wasn't hers.
Nora was moved to a confidential safe location that same afternoon. Her school was told, in writing, that no one except me or Dana's designated advocate was permitted to collect her — no exceptions, under any circumstances.
That evening, another message came through on Cole's phone.
Tomorrow morning. Do it before the state cops figure out what's happening.

Investigators made the call to let Cole believe his plan was still moving forward undetected.
Nora, however, would be nowhere near that school when he arrived.
