Chapter 5 - The Perfect Last Word

We turned to go. The guests opened a path without a word — a few nods, a few people finding somewhere else to look.
Kayla stood by the doors, her hands knotted together. When I reached her she blinked hard and mouthed, thank you. She'd been terrified all day that I'd name her.
"No," I whispered, squeezing her hand as I passed. "Thank you."
Behind us, Grant hadn't moved, his jaw locked tight. Marlene was crossing the floor toward him.
"You idiot," she hissed.
And that — that — was the perfect last word.
I didn't lose a fiancé that day. I walked out with my dignity, my kids, and the truth.
