Chapter 2 - The Quiet Preparation

I walked into the living room and looked at my three kids, sound asleep on the couch. Theo was curled under a heavy blue blanket after a long soccer practice. Harper and Violet were tangled together nearby, hands almost touching. None of them had any idea the man who'd promised to protect them had just laid out, calmly and in detail, exactly how he planned to use them.

I closed the living room door softly and pulled out my phone.

My first call went to our wedding planner, a kind woman named Colette.

"Colette, I need to make a small addition to the reception program."

"Of course, sweetie — what do you need changed?"

"A short video presentation, right after the toasts. I'll bring the file myself, on a flash drive."

"Consider it done," she said, easy as that, no questions asked.

Next I called my bank manager, an old family friend named Robert.

"Robert, I need every one of my personal accounts locked down. Today."

"Everything okay?" His tone shifted instantly, serious.

"I just need to make sure no new names get added to anything without my signature, in person, at the branch."

"I'll flag your profile right now."

Then I called a sharp family attorney, a man named Warren Blake, and laid out the entire situation at my kitchen table, start to finish, without leaving anything out.

"I want every deed, every insurance policy, every trust fund for my kids checked and confirmed secure," I told him.

"You're doing exactly the right thing," he said. "We'll go through every document line by line. He won't touch a dime."

I also called the county clerk's office to confirm exactly where our marriage paperwork stood, and what I needed to do to make sure the ceremony wouldn't legally bind me to anything.

Through all of it, Julian carried on like absolutely nothing had happened. He called the next morning, same cheerful voice as always.

"Everything okay, sweetheart?"

I almost laughed out loud at the sheer irony of the question. "Everything's absolutely perfect," I said, smooth as silk.

He had no idea what was coming. Neither did Eleanor. They fully believed their carefully engineered little plan was still rolling forward exactly as intended.

And technically — it was. I drove to the venue the next afternoon. I put on the expensive white dress. I smiled through every photograph. I greeted every arriving guest at the door like the happiest bride in Arizona.

Julian showed up looking every bit the devoted, handsome groom everyone in that room believed him to be. Eleanor sat in the front row wearing a satisfied little smile, looking at me like she'd already collected her prize.

I smiled right back at her from across the room.

But this time, I knew exactly what that smile was hiding.
