Chapter 7 - The Man Who Waited

Slowly, over years, things changed. Eleanor became family — not instantly, but honestly, learning school pickup routines and which nightmares belonged to which child. Marcus moved to a residential veterans' program in Montana, writing careful letters reviewed by a psychologist before delivery. Some were rejected. The good ones, eventually, were short and human:

Caleb — your mother told me you asked whether I was the daddy who said you never existed. The truthful answer is yes. I said that because I was afraid, selfish, and wrong. You were real. You mattered. I do not expect you to forgive me. I am going to work on becoming honest enough that, someday, you may feel safe asking me questions. — Marcus

Meanwhile, Renata met Julian Reyes, a pediatric trauma surgeon, at a task force fundraiser. Kind hands, calm eyes, the rare ability to enter chaos without needing to control it. When Caleb asked, "Are you going to disappear?" Julian said, "No. But I won't make promises with fancy words. I'll show up when I say I will, and you can keep track."

Caleb made a chart. Julian never missed a box.

Marcus met the children twice under supervision — painfully polite the first time, painfully honest the second. When Caleb asked, "Did you love Mama?" Marcus said, "Yes. Not well enough. Not bravely enough. But yes."

Afterward, in the parking lot, Marcus told Renata he was resigning his commission fully, giving up any deal, any quiet reassignment. "I gave them everything. What my father did. What I did."

"For what it's worth," Renata said, "that was the first decision you've told me that sounded like a father instead of a soldier."
