Chapter 1 - The Question That Silenced the Room

My daughter's MIL mocked her weight in front of every guest at the shower — then her husband put down his fork and asked his mother the one question she'd been dreading.

My daughter, Hannah, was eight months pregnant the afternoon we finally threw her baby shower.

We'd booked the back room of a little tea house on Maple Crossing — string lights, a balloon arch, folding chairs with white covers my sister ironed the night before.

Hannah walked in glowing. Hair down, cheeks pink, one hand resting on the curve of her belly like she still couldn't believe it was real.

She looked beautiful. She looked happy.

Then her mother-in-law, Diane, arrived.

Diane had spent two years slipping little remarks about Hannah's body into ordinary conversation. A comment about portion sizes. A raised eyebrow at a second helping. Always with a smile, always just quiet enough to deny later.

That afternoon, she didn't bother being quiet.

When the dessert plates came out, Hannah reached for a slice of vanilla cake.

Diane laughed. Loud enough that the women at the far end of the table turned their heads.

"Are you sure that's a good idea?"

The room went still.

Hannah set her fork down slowly, the way you do when you're trying not to react.

Diane smiled like she'd said something helpful.

"I'm only saying it because somebody has to. Not all of that is baby weight, sweetheart."

I felt the heat climb up my neck. I opened my mouth.

But Hannah's husband, Mark, got there first. He didn't raise his voice. He just set his fork down on the edge of his plate, folded his hands, and looked straight at his mother.

Then he asked her one question.

"Should I tell Hannah why you really paid for her prenatal appointments?"

The color left Diane's face.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"You know exactly what I'm talking about."

Hannah turned to him. "My appointments? Mark, what does your mother have to do with my appointments?"

Diane stood up fast enough that her chair scraped. "This is not the place for this."

Mark reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded envelope. "You picked the place, Mom. The second you decided to humiliate my wife in front of her friends."

He slid it across the tablecloth.

Diane lunged for it.

Hannah got there first.

She frowned at the front of it. "Why is my name on this?"

Nobody at that table moved. Nobody breathed.

Hannah opened it and turned to the second page. Her free hand flew to her stomach.

"Mark. What is this?"

Before he could answer, her phone lit up and buzzed against the table. The screen said her OB's office.

She picked it up. She answered.

I watched every bit of color drain out of my daughter's face.

May you like

"Yes," she said quietly. "I'm with my husband."
