Chapter 6 - The StudioThat night, in Delia's quiet guest room, I slept nine uninterrupted hours. The weeks that followed passed with a strange, beautiful peace.

I didn't magically recover my missing two hundred thousand dollars. Nor did I hire an expensive attorney and launch an exhausting legal battle. After carefully reviewing my options, I accepted that proving financial elder abuse would be long and painful, since I had willingly signed those bank transfers four years earlier without putting strict legal conditions in writing.

At seventy-two, I had to decide what mattered more to recover. My money. Or my remaining peace.

I chose peace.

Meanwhile, without me doing anything, Priscilla and Roland's fragile lifestyle began collapsing under its own weight. Marisol called a week later while I was out grocery shopping. "Eleanor, you would not believe the chaos in that house right now. Getting the utilities reconnected took almost four days because Roland went into the main office demanding VIP treatment and ended up in a screaming match with the desk clerk."

"Did they get it sorted out?"

"Eventually, but half the food in their fridge spoiled while the power was out, and they had to spend hundreds on emergency hotel rooms, late fees, and security deposits."

That was only the beginning. Roland missed an important digital presentation during the outage, costing him his quarterly bonus. Their credit cards maxed out. The mortgage on their expanded home was crushing them. And my pension was no longer there to absorb everyday expenses.

Priscilla tried hiring someone to replace what I'd been doing. The first candidate quit after two chaotic days. The second demanded a monthly salary that made Roland turn pale. Cooking three meals a day, endless laundry, ironing shirts, driving Desmond to school, groceries, the dog, managing the house — it had never been "a little help." It was full-time work. And now they were learning what it actually cost.

One sunny Saturday, Priscilla called. I let it ring three times before answering.

"Hello, Mom," her voice sounded humbled and tired.

"Hello, Priscilla."

"Can I bring Desmond to see you at the town park tomorrow morning?"

"Yes, I would love that very much."
