Chapter 5 - Gold Letters on the Door

Diane pulled a chair over and poured us both water from the pitcher on my desk. Her whole face had gone gentle.

"I'm sorry I dragged you into my marriage, Megan. The camera got all of it. Nobody is ever going to twist this into his word against yours."

For the first time in months, I felt my shoulders come down from around my ears.

"Your job is safe," she said. "Your raise was already in motion — you'll see it Friday. And by this time next year, your name goes on that door. Junior partner."

I didn't have any words. I just nodded, blinking fast.

"You didn't do anything wrong," she added. "I want you to hear me say it out loud. Greg is just a jerk."

A year later there were four of us.

Every woman Diane had mentored, all working in the same office, building something that actually felt like ours.

My name is on the door now, in fresh gold letters. I've got a sticky note on the bottom of my monitor that says, "The right people believe you before you have to prove anything."

I don't check the parking lot anymore. I just pick up my keys and walk out into the evening.
