Chapter 5 - Walking In

Weeks later, I stood beside Julian outside the school auditorium. His daughter stood between us in her graduation gown, one hand gripping her father's, the other gripping mine. She had chosen not to wear the hat she'd once used to hide.

When the doors opened, the hallway was already crowded with students and families. A few heads turned. She felt it — I knew because her fingers tightened around mine. Two girls near the doors stopped talking when they saw her. For half a second, she stopped walking.

Julian didn't pull her forward. Neither did I. We just stayed beside her.

She looked at her father. Then she looked at me. And she took the next step herself.

By the time we reached the auditorium doors, people were clapping for the graduates filing inside. She straightened her shoulders and walked in with us beside her.

Later, when her name was called, Julian shot to his feet. I did too. She crossed that stage smiling.

Afterward, she found us in the crowd and threw her arms around her father. "You were right about one thing," she whispered.

Julian laughed. "Only one?"

"I didn't have to do it alone."

He looked over her shoulder at me.

Twenty-five years ago, Julian had stood beside me when I wanted to hide from the world. Now, together, we'd done the same for his daughter.

I had spent years wondering how I could ever return his kindness.

Standing there beside them, I finally knew.
