Chapter 3 - What Caleb Knew

I drove home with the pictures on the passenger seat and Caleb sitting obliviously in the back with Waffles. Ms. Dunlap's question kept looping in my head like a song I couldn't turn off. If that isn't you, who is she?
That night, after Caleb fell asleep clutching Waffles, I sat on the edge of his bed and studied his face. I didn't want to scare him. I just needed answers.
The next morning over cereal, I tried to sound casual. "Caleb, honey, can you tell me more about the lady in your pictures?"
He didn't even look up from his spoon. "She has gray hair. And a red scarf. She sits on the bench by the gate."
"Does she talk to you?"
"Sometimes. She asks if I had a good day. She waits with me until your car comes."

I set my coffee down slowly. "Does she ever ask you to go somewhere with her?"
He shook his head. "No, Mommy. She just waits."
