My 15-Year-Old Son Never Came Home After a School Trip — Half a Year Later, a Text Sent Me Straight to His Old Bus Seat

Chapter 1 - The Text From Nowhere

For six months, I told myself my son had simply vanished into thin air. That was easier than the alternative.

Then, on an ordinary Tuesday evening, a text came through from a number I didn't recognize.

*"Mom, it's Caleb. Don't reply. Check under my seat on the school bus."*

I read it three times, standing frozen in my kitchen with a dish towel still in my hand.

Then I called Detective Reyes, the man who'd been assigned to my son's case since the day he disappeared.

Six months earlier, Caleb had left on a three-day school trip to the state capital with his best friend, Tyler Brennan. The bus was supposed to bring him home Sunday evening.

It came back without him.

Tyler told the police he'd watched Caleb climb aboard that morning for the ride home. A handful of other kids remembered seeing him near the bus at some point, but nobody could pin down exactly when. Somewhere between the capital and our town, my son had slipped through a crack nobody noticed until it was too late.

The police checked rest stops. They pulled security footage. They talked to every student and teacher on that trip, and they chased down every name I gave them — including one I hadn't said out loud in over a decade.

None of it led anywhere.

I searched too. I couldn't not. Every Friday, I called Detective Reyes just to hear him say the same thing.

"We're still looking, Diane."

Then that text arrived, and I didn't wait for him to call me back. I grabbed my keys and drove straight to Caleb's school.
