Chapter 4 - What the Promise Cost

The chapel door opened behind me. Nathaniel sat down one row back.
"You still should have told me," I said between sobs.
"I know. But how was I supposed to refuse my daughter's dying wish?"
I turned to look at him. "She was eighteen years old. Everyone had been making decisions about her body for nearly a year straight. She asked me for control over exactly one thing."
His voice cracked. "I couldn't take that away from her too."
"That couple upstairs—"
"Priya's parents." He made a broken sound. "She's in surgery right now for a kidney transplant."
"Claire's kidney?"
"The doctors won't confirm anything outright. But given the timing..."
I looked back down at the letter. "Why did you beg the doctor not to tell me?"
"Because I promised her."

I was still angry. But now I understood exactly what keeping that promise had cost him too.
I folded the letter carefully and stood up. "I want to meet Priya's parents."
