Chapter 6 - The CardsWhat Corinne's forensic accountant found, over the following two weeks, was not catastrophic in the way I'd braced myself for, but it was substantial enough to change how I understood the entire shape of my marriage.

Desmond had, over the previous eight months, made several large charges to a joint credit card I rarely monitored closely — a card technically in both our names, funded entirely by transfers from my personal accounts, because Desmond's consulting income had never been enough to cover our actual lifestyle and both of us had simply, silently, agreed not to discuss that fact directly. Among those charges: two weekend trips to Napa that I had never been on, a designer handbag that matched nothing in my closet, and a series of dinners at restaurants Desmond had told me, at the time, were "client meetings."

None of it was large enough, individually, to have raised alarms. Together, over eight months, it painted the picture of a man who had grown so comfortable inside a life he hadn't built that he'd stopped noticing — or stopped caring — where the boundary between his life and mine actually was.

I had the locks changed formally, through a licensed locksmith accompanied by a sheriff's deputy, six days after Desmond first spoke to me through that doorbell camera. He was given a legal notice to vacate along with a formal timeline to remove his personal belongings under supervision. Bianca, as it turned out, had already quietly moved back out three days earlier, once she'd apparently learned — through channels neither Desmond nor I ever fully clarified — that the house she'd been treating as a fresh start belonged entirely, unambiguously, to the woman whose newborn daughter she'd been living twenty feet away from.

Desmond tried, for a while, to argue that he deserved some financial consideration given "years of contribution to the household." Corinne's response to that argument, delivered calmly across a mediation table, was to produce eight months of credit card statements showing precisely what kind of contribution he'd actually been making while his wife was on bed rest carrying his child.

He stopped arguing shortly after that.
