Chapter 2 - The Document in the Drawer

I barely slept. I lay in the guest room listening to the house tick and creak around me, seeing that foot rise off the footrest over and over. Like it was nothing. Like he'd done it a hundred times.

Because he had.

Next morning I carried his breakfast up. Trevor was already parked in the hallway.

"How'd he do overnight?" he asked. Way too relaxed about it.

"Slept fine," I said.

Trevor held my eyes a beat longer than any normal person would. Then he smiled and moved off down the stairs.

Around noon I heard Colleen on the kitchen phone.

"She's brand new. She doesn't know anything yet. Just keep the doctor's report reading exactly the way it reads now."

She spotted me in the doorway and her voice snapped flat. "Diane. Lunch is at one."

That evening, after I brought Warren his medication, he asked me to stay.

"Did anyone talk to you today?"

"Trevor asked how your night went. Colleen was on a call."

His face tightened. "What did she say on the call?"

I repeated it word for word.

Warren was quiet a long time. Then he opened the drawer of his nightstand and put a folded document in my hand.

"That's the ownership structure of my company. Look at the date it was last changed."

I looked. Three weeks after his accident.

"Warren—"

"Somebody in this house filed that," he said softly. "While I was still lying in a hospital bed."
