Chapter 4 - What He Buried by the Drain

I scrolled through the rest of her photos.

The documents. The fence. A tape measure stretched between two survey stakes. Then a picture of our storm drain, the concrete collar around it cracked and lifted.

"Mom, what is this one?"

She hesitated. "His wall will block the drainage."

"What wall? He doesn't have a permit."

She zoomed in. Past the cedar fence, in Dale's yard, there was a shallow trench already dug, maybe ten feet of it, the dirt piled in a neat ridge alongside.

He hadn't been waiting on anyone's permission. He'd already started building.

"If he puts a wall on that line," Mom said, "the rain has nowhere to go but along your foundation."

Karim frowned. "How bad are we talking?"

She looked at him. "Bad enough that he needs your signature before the city ever sees his plan. If you sign, the water damage becomes yours. Not his."

That changed the shape of everything.

Dale wasn't just trying to take two feet of dirt.

He was trying to get us to put our name on the flooding his own wall would cause.

The chalk wasn't random hate. It was leverage. He wanted my mother rattled enough to keep her mouth shut and sign whatever he put in front of her.

I called the police. Then I called the city.

The officer who came out took photos and walked over to talk to Dale. Dale denied all of it. Said my mother had misread a friendly chat about the fence. Said the papers were "just drafts." Said somebody else must have made that Arabic translation, not him.

Then the officer asked about his security camera.

Dale said it was broken.

Again.

And that might have been the end of it.

Except my mother had noticed one more thing.

"The doorbell camera," she said.

I shook my head. "We don't have one."

May you like

"Not ours." She pointed across the street. "Hers."

Mrs. Hartley. Eighty-four years old, mostly deaf, napped every afternoon and was wide awake half the night. Her doorbell camera pointed straight across the road at our driveway.
