Chapter 3 - What Priya Didn't KnowMeanwhile, his perfect Italian escape began falling apart. Priya had apparently believed Graham was already separated and financially independent. According to messages he later sent me, he'd promised her a furnished apartment in Rome and several months without work while they "started over." When his accounts got restricted and the apartment payment failed, she discovered that nearly everything he'd told her was incomplete.
Three days after landing, Graham called from a hotel. "Priya left."
I said nothing.
"She says I lied to her."
"You did."
Then he changed tactics. "If you help release some of the money, I'll come home and we can fix this."
I almost laughed. "There is no home for you to come back to."
He got angry again, accused me of using Wren against him. That was when I stopped answering his calls altogether and routed everything through our attorneys.
Two weeks later, the lender sent documentation from the home-equity application. The electronic signature looked like mine, but the security log showed the application had been completed from Graham's laptop while I was at a work conference in Denver.

There was another problem for him. The $40,000 hadn't gone toward our house. Bank records showed $18,000 paid off Graham's personal credit cards, $9,000 funded the Rome apartment deposit, and another $11,000 was transferred directly to Priya.
When Naomi showed me the statement, she tapped the final line. "Sable, he didn't just leave you." She looked up. "He financed the affair with debt attached to your home."
