Chapter 3 - The Back Porch

Then he showed up at Denise's house.
He looked wrecked — unshaven, hollow-eyed, like he hadn't slept since the dinner.
"Can we talk?" he asked.
"No."
"Please, Rachel."
I don't know why I said yes. Maybe I just wanted to see if he had anything real to say. We sat out on Denise's back porch, the screen door banging shut behind us.
He apologized. Said he'd handled everything terribly. Then he said, "I never actually expected you to leave."
I stared at him. "You asked me for a divorce, Marcus. At the dinner table. In front of your whole family."
"I didn't mean it like that."
"Then how did you mean it?"
He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.
Eventually, he admitted what was actually going on underneath it. He'd spent years trying to be everyone's hero — Kayla's rescuer, the fixer, the one who couldn't say no. He'd never once set a boundary with her in his entire life. And when I finally confronted him about the money, he felt cornered instead of caught. The divorce announcement had been a reaction, not a decision — something he'd blurted out because he didn't know how else to make the pressure stop.
Then he said, "You humiliated me. In front of everyone."
I almost laughed in his face. "You're worried about being humiliated? You ended our marriage during a family dinner, Marcus."
He looked down at his hands.
Then he said something I wasn't expecting at all. "Kayla moved out yesterday."
"What?"
"We had a massive fight. I told her I was done covering for her."
"And?"
May you like
He finally looked up at me. "I realized I've been sacrificing my marriage to fix problems that were never mine to fix."
Maybe he finally understood. I honestly didn't know if it was too late.
