Chapter 3 - The Jacket in the Garage

We were nearly out the door to Dana's house — I'd already told Aaron about the playdate — when Lily gasped and grabbed my arm.

"My jacket! I left it in Daddy's car!"

Aaron had come home early that day and was stretched out on the bed taking a quick nap.

"Here." I pressed his car keys into her hand and hit the button to raise the garage door from the inside. "Run out, grab it from the back seat, come straight back. I'm almost ready."

She was gone maybe three minutes. When she skipped back in with the jacket hooked over her arm, she looked completely ordinary. Happy, even. Nothing about her face made me think twice.

"Ready?" I asked, closing the garage.

"Ready!"

I dropped her at Dana's and picked her up a few hours later. She'd had so much fun she could barely keep her eyes open. At dinner she actually dozed off at the table, chin drifting toward her mashed potatoes.

Aaron laughed and carried her up to bed. We stood in her doorway a minute, both of us grinning like idiots because our girl had finally found her person.

I had no idea what the morning would bring.
