Chapter 2 - The Bill

I looked at my children sitting beside the potted ferns, my son's crooked heart-covered card still clutched in his lap. Then I handed the tablet back to the coordinator.

"Cancel the premium bar," I said. "Remove the dessert table. End the band on time. Switch dinner over to the basic menu."

She stared at me. "Sir — everyone's going to notice."

"That's the point."

Within minutes, staff started clearing bottles off the bar. The huge three-tier cake disappeared through a side door. My mother shot up out of her chair, outraged.

"Who authorized this?"

The waiter's eyes flicked toward me. She stormed over. "Kenneth. What are you doing?"

"I'm paying for what's necessary. Nothing more."

My father's face went red. "Don't embarrass us."

"My children were seated next to flowerpots," I said, "at a party I paid for. That was the embarrassing part."

Brenda sneered that I was ruining Mom's birthday on purpose.

"For years," I said, "I paid your rent, your bills, your debts, and your kids' birthday parties. I never once asked for anything in return. Today, you all showed me exactly where my kids stand in this family. So now you know where my wallet stands too."

My mother started crying. "You're ruining everything."

May you like

"No," I said. "You ruined it the moment you decided my children needed to learn their place."

I signed the reduced invoice, took Sarah and the kids by the hand, and walked out.
