Chapter 4 - The Girl in Every Photo

There were six of us in our high school group. I could list every name in two seconds. We'd been bridesmaids at each other's weddings or mailed gifts when we couldn't make it, and even after the group chat went quiet, we still sent the so happy for you texts and meant them.

I thought we all meant them.

I sat in my car and scrolled back through years of photos. Prom. Graduation on the football field. My wedding.

She was in every one. Smiling. Standing right next to me. Holding my bouquet while I fixed my veil.

Sabrina. Sabrina Kohl, who'd moved to Charlotte two years after our wedding and mailed a Christmas card every December with a picture of her golden retriever on the front. Sabrina, who'd called on my birthday last year and talked for forty minutes about nothing.

Sabrina, who had been Ethan's chemistry lab partner junior year.

I called Beth.

"Sabrina Kohl. What do you know about her and Ethan?"

The pause lasted a half-second too long.

"Beth."

"There were rumors," she said. "Back in school. I never thought they meant anything, because everybody knew you and Ethan were basically married already."

"What kind of rumors?"

"That they had a thing before you two got serious. That it didn't end clean. I swear I don't know the details. It was hallway gossip, and then you actually married him and I filed it under ancient history."

Ancient history. Bankrolled by a secret account opened eleven months after I said my vows.

"She's linked to one of the business accounts he used to move money," I said.

Beth was quiet for a long moment. "Are you somewhere safe right now?"

"A parking lot."

"Come to my house. Don't go home. Don't call him. Just come here."

Beth met me at the door and pulled me inside without a word. She sat me at her kitchen table and set down a cup of tea I never touched.

"I need to understand what he's actually doing," I said. "He opens an account in my name. He funnels money into it — money that's already partly mine. Then what? What's the point?"

"Control," Beth said. "Or a way out. If he ever wanted to leave you, he'd have a stash you didn't know existed. And if something ever went wrong legally, the money's sitting in your name. Not his."

I sat with that.

"So either he built himself a secret escape fund," I said, "or he's been setting me up to take the fall for something."

Beth's face told me she'd already landed on both and hadn't wanted to say either out loud.

My phone lit up. Ethan.

Five years of that name meaning home. I let it ring out.

He called again immediately. I let it ring again.

Then a text: hey where are you? thought you'd be home by now. dinner?

Dinner. Like it was any ordinary Tuesday. Like I hadn't just spent an afternoon learning my marriage was a crime scene with my signature on the paperwork.

"What are you going to do?" Beth asked.

"I don't know yet. But somebody sent me those messages, and they know more than we do. They knew about the account. They knew about Sabrina. They've been watching this for a while."

I opened the unknown thread and typed: Who are you?

May you like

Three dots. They stopped. Started again.

Someone who made the exact mistake you made. Meet me tomorrow. I'll explain all of it. Do not tell Ethan.
