Chapter 7 - Raymond Makes His Move

I called Claire from Howard's front step.

She picked up before the first ring finished. "Mom. What is happening."

"Listen to me very carefully," I said. "The man who called you is not a journalist. His name is Raymond Renner. He was your father's business partner years ago. Do not talk to him again. Do not pick up any number you don't recognize. Not today, not this week."

"You're scaring me."

"I know. I'm sorry. I need you to trust me a little longer."

"Does this have to do with Dad?"

I looked at the quiet street. A dog barking somewhere. A completely ordinary Tuesday.

"Yes," I said. "I'll explain all of it soon, I promise. Right now I need you to call your brother and tell him the exact same thing. Nobody talks about your father's money. Not yet."

Claire was quiet a second. "Okay," she said. "Okay, Mom."

Back inside, Eli was helping Howard sort the documents into two piles — originals and copies. Howard had already made us a set. He handed me a sealed envelope.

"Everything Diane Marsh will need. The timeline, the transfer records, the audio on a flash drive, and a signed statement from me."

"Thank you," I said. "For keeping it. For not letting it disappear."

Howard looked at me steadily.

"Walter was a decent man who made a frightened choice and then paid for it every day for three years. That's not the same as a bad man." He paused. "Raymond Renner has been doing this his whole career. Your husband wasn't the first."

"There are others?"

"Diane can tell you more than I can. But yes. I have good reason to think there are at least two other families." His face didn't change, but something behind his eyes did. "Raymond's careful. Careful people still leave a pattern."

Eli and I drove back toward the city. Forty minutes in, his phone rang. He looked at the screen.

"Raymond."

"Put it on speaker."

Eli answered. "Hello."

"Where are you?" The smoothness was still there, but something under it had pulled tight.

"Driving."

"You went up to Coldbrook."

Eli didn't answer.

"Eli." The voice dropped a notch. "I want you to think hard about what you're doing right now. I'm the only family you've got left on this earth. I gave you a job when you had nothing and nobody. I paid your rent for two years after your mother died. You owe me a lot more than this."

"I owe you the truth," Eli said. "I think that's what you're getting."

"Don't be stupid." The voice went flat and hard. "Those papers point straight at Walter Whitfield. If this goes forward, his estate gets frozen while they investigate. His widow can't touch their joint accounts for years while lawyers pick at it. Is that what you want for her? You want to do that to an old woman who just buried her husband?"

I leaned toward the phone.

"Mr. Renner," I said. "This is Margaret Whitfield."

Silence on the line.

"I want you to know," I said, "that I've sat down with Howard Pryce. I have the transfer records. I have the timeline. I have a recording my husband made in October of 2021, in his own voice. And I already have the name of a financial-crimes attorney. Now here's the last thing I want you to know."

I kept my voice level.

"Walter's estate is in my name. Only mine. We moved everything into my name in 2020, for exactly this kind of situation, because my husband was a great deal more careful than you ever gave him credit for. There is nothing of ours for you to freeze."

The pause this time was long.

"You're making a mistake," Raymond said. His voice had gone dead flat.

"I already made the call," I said. "Diane Marsh is expecting us this afternoon."

The line went dead.

Eli let out a long breath. His knuckles on the wheel were white.

"Is that true? About the estate?"

"Yes. Walter restructured everything after he confronted Raymond. Howard helped him do it." I looked out the window. "He was frightened. He wasn't frozen solid."

Eli nodded slowly. We drove in silence for a while.

"He'll try something else," he said.

"I know he will."

"So what do we do?"

"We get to Diane Marsh's office before he does."

Eli pressed the gas. The road opened up in front of us.

My phone buzzed. Unknown number. Not four words this time. Just one.

May you like

Careful.
