Chapter 2 - What Was in Her BagFor several agonizing seconds, I couldn't find my voice. "Told me what?"

Nadia looked down at the boys. The older twin opened his eyes and looked up at me with an expression so familiar it physically ached in my chest.
"Their names are Sawyer and Rhys," she said softly.
"How old?"
"Five."
I dropped to my knees right there on the cold airport floor. "Are they mine?"
She nodded once.
She reached into her worn tote bag and pulled out a stack of papers bound with a thick rubber band — unopened letters addressed to my office, every one stamped RETURN TO SENDER, printed copies of emails sent to an old account I'd stopped checking years ago, and a cashier's check for sixty thousand dollars signed in my mother's elegant, unmistakable handwriting.
"Your mother offered me this to disappear," Nadia said, her voice dropping to an icy whisper. "I refused it. Three days later she told me you already knew about the pregnancy and wanted nothing to do with either of us."
I went pale. "I never knew, Nadia. I swear to God I never knew any of this."
"I believe that now," she whispered.
She told me that three days after that conversation, her landlord abruptly canceled her lease, and my family's corporate attorney formally served her with a notice warning that any further attempt to contact me would be treated as harassment and extortion.
"Why are you back in Chicago now?" I asked, heart hammering.
She pointed up at the departure board. "Because your mother found us again."
My phone buzzed violently in my hand. MOTHER, calling.
I answered, and Constance spoke without so much as a hello. "Weston, do not believe a single word that woman is telling you."
I stood up slowly, scanning the terminal. "How do you already know I'm standing with her?"
Nadia was staring past my shoulder, eyes wide with something close to terror.
Fifty yards away across the concourse stood my mother, flanked by Raymond Ashcroft, our family's senior corporate counsel, holding a thick gray legal folder. Stamped across the cover, in bold type, were two names.
