Chapter 6 - Pizza Nora

I expected Jesse to pull up to an apartment building. Instead he turned into the driveway of a modest brick house on the edge of Millbrook. Bikes leaned against the garage. A basketball hoop over the door. Chalk drawings all over the pavement.

"You have children," I said.

"Two. I was getting there."

The front door opened and a woman came out — Jesse's age, dark hair, a warm, open face. Two kids crowded behind her. A boy around twelve. A girl maybe eight.

The little girl came flying across the lawn. "Dad!"

He caught her and hugged her, and the word landed on me like a wave. Dad.

He walked around and opened my car door. "Nora, this is my wife, Rachel."

"I've heard about you for years," Rachel said, smiling.

The little girl stared up at me. "Are you Pizza Nora?"

"Mia," Jesse groaned.

I started laughing and couldn't stop. "Pizza Nora?"

"Dad says you're the reason he likes pepperoni," the boy said.

"I regret everything," Jesse said into his hand.

Mia took my hand and towed me toward the house. "You can sit by me. Do you like pizza?"

"Very much."

"Good."

At dinner, Rachel ordered pizza. Jesse protested that it was manipulation. Mia asked me a hundred questions — did I really give her dad cookies, was he skinny, did he have bad hair, did he really watch cartoons. The boy, Owen, mostly listened, then asked, "Did Dad really mow your lawn for chocolate?"

"I never let him," I said.

"Thank you," Jesse said.

"But he offered."

Later, after the kids went up, Rachel brought me tea. I sat in their kitchen — magnets on the fridge, school papers, a bowl of fruit, dishes in the sink. Ordinary. Beautiful.

"Why didn't you come sooner?" I asked Jesse.

He looked at Rachel. She squeezed his shoulder.

"Shame," he said.

"For what?"

"For letting you believe it. And for missing you. I kept thinking if I came back, it would mean admitting I still needed you."

"And?"

May you like

"I did."

I reached across the table and took his hand. "You never stopped being family."
