I Cut Off My Ex-Husband's Family the Day My Divorce Cleared—Then a Storage Unit Revealed the Fraud They'd Signed With My Name

Chapter 1 - The Card Is Canceled

The pen was still warm in my fingers when my phone flashed Ethan's name across the screen.

I let it ring twice. Ten months of mediation, of his lawyer's cold emails and his mother's theatrical accusations, and there was still only one word I wanted from him. Sorry. Just once. Maybe, I told myself, that was why he was calling.

"What is wrong with you, Nora?"

So. Not sorry.

"Good morning to you too, Ethan."

"My mother's credit card was declined last night. In front of two hundred people at the Kingsley gala." His voice was already climbing. "Do you have the faintest idea what you've done?"

I carried my espresso over to the windows. Forty-one floors down, Chicago was stretching awake — headlights crawling along Lake Shore Drive, the lake lying flat and pewter under a weak sun. Behind me, the apartment was silent. No TV muttering in the next room. No golf bag by the door. For the first time in five years, the silence in that place belonged to me.

"She had the winning bid on a Cartier necklace. Fifty thousand dollars. The auctioneer had already said her name." He was almost yelling now. "Then the card bounced and the entire ballroom watched a sixty-four-year-old woman get walked out like she'd been caught stealing. My mother, Nora."

For five years I had paid for Victoria Sterling's life. The handbags she "just happened to see." The suites in Positano and Aspen. The tennis bracelet for her birthday, the earrings for Christmas, the standing Friday table at the steakhouse on Michigan Avenue that somehow always landed on my card. She never once introduced me as her daughter-in-law. She introduced me as "Ethan's wife, she's in finance," the way you'd point out a useful appliance.

I was an unlimited credit card with a heartbeat.

"Ethan." I set the cup down. "The divorce was finalized ninety minutes ago. If my name isn't attached to your family anymore, then neither is my money. That card is canceled. So is the other one. We're done."

"Nora, don't you dare hang up—"

I hung up.

Then I blocked his number, his mother's, and the landline at the Lake Forest house, just to be thorough.

I actually believed that was the end of it.
