Chapter 7 - What Vanessa Knew the Whole Time

They arrested Vanessa on a Tuesday.
I wasn't there. I was on the third floor in physical therapy, learning to walk the length of the hallway without holding the rail, when Bell called.
"It's done. Conspiracy to cause serious bodily harm. Fraud. Attempted tampering with a minor witness."
I stopped walking. The therapist caught my elbow.
"Where is she?"
"Processing. Arraignment's tomorrow morning." A pause. "She asked to see you."
"No."
"That's what I told them you'd say."
I stood there in the middle of the corridor, the rail a foot off my hand, the window at the end full of a flat grey November sky.
"What about Daniel?"
"New lawyer as of this morning. Guy named Hollis. Competent, not Barrett. The DA's pushing for him to be held — flight risk. Daniel owns property in two countries."
"Will they get it?"
"Judge is looking at it now."
I thanked him and hung up.
The therapist — a calm woman named Marla who'd worked with me every day for a week — waited until the phone was back in my pocket. "Ready to keep going?"
"Yes."
I walked the rest of the hall without the rail.
That afternoon Ms. Brennan came in with something I hadn't expected.
"Vanessa's lawyer reached out this morning. She wants a deal."
"What kind of deal?"
"Full cooperation with the case against Daniel. In exchange for a reduced charge and a sentencing recommendation."
I looked at the page. Vanessa's name at the top. Her attorney's underneath.
"What does full cooperation mean?"
"It means she gives them all of it. The original plan. Who came to whom first. The timeline. The money. Sofia's part. Wade Turner. Everything." Ms. Brennan set it on the table. "It also means she testifies against Daniel if it goes to trial."
"And she gets?"
"Down to a single count of fraud. Probably a suspended sentence and community service, with her clean record and the cooperation." She paused. "Rachel, I'll be straight with you. If she cooperates all the way, it's basically the end of Daniel. The case becomes airtight."
"And if she doesn't?"
"Then the DA prosecutes them both the same. Harder case. Longer. Less certain."
I was quiet a moment. "Did she say anything? When she asked to talk to me — did she say anything?"
Ms. Brennan hesitated. "She said she was sorry." A pause. "She also said she'd been in love with Daniel for three years. Before you, during your marriage, after. She said she'd told herself it wasn't her fault, because he chased her."
The words came down over me like ice water.
Three years.
I got married in Vanessa's dress. She lent it to me herself, standing in her bedroom, doing the buttons up my spine, telling me I was beautiful.
"Let her cooperate," I said.
Ms. Brennan looked at me carefully. "You're sure?"
"It's not forgiveness. It's strategy. Daniel cut my brakes. Daniel built this. Vanessa was weak and greedy and she made choices that almost k!lled me — but the plan was his. I want him to answer for every piece of it."
Ms. Brennan nodded and picked up the document. At the door she stopped. "For what it's worth, she cried when I told her you'd agreed."
"I know," I said.
