Chapter 4 - What the Records Showed
The police arranged a hotel under another name. That night, Rosie slept in a bassinet beside my bed while I stared at the ceiling.
Who wrote that note? Who knew Grant was coming? Who knew about the papers? Who knew enough to believe I was actually in danger? And why paint the house — why not just call, or knock?
It took months to get the full answer.
Caleb's accident was reopened. Under real scrutiny, the original story fell apart fast. Investigators found paint transfer on the rear bumper that had been overlooked the first time — damage completely inconsistent with a single-car accident. His car had been struck from behind before it ever left the road.
Then detectives pulled his phone records. Two hours before he died, Grant had texted him, asking him to meet on that rural road, late at night, to talk about money.
That's when everything clicked into place.
Grant was drowning in debt. Caleb knew it — he'd bailed his brother out before, more than once, but shortly before his death he'd finally refused to keep doing it. Grant knew about the life insurance. He knew I was the beneficiary. He knew Rosie came after me. And the moment Caleb died, Grant moved fast, positioning himself right at the center of our finances — the helpful brother, the man handling the paperwork, the one telling the pregnant widow to rest and let him take care of everything.
All he needed was one final signature giving him guardianship and financial control. After that, there would have been exactly one person left standing between him and everything Caleb had left behind.

The note had warned: he will not do in front of witnesses what he was going to do in private. Somebody had understood precisely what Grant was preparing to do — and turned my house into a spectacle so he couldn't do it quietly.
Grant was arrested. Investigators built the case on phone records, financial evidence, the paint transfer, the accident reconstruction, and the guardianship papers he'd tried to force me to sign. He was eventually charged with Caleb's murder, fraud, and several related counts.
