Chapter 3 - Don't Sign AnythingThen my phone rang. Mom. Grandma answered before I could reach it. "Deirdre, Renee is here."

Silence. Then Mom said, "Don't sign anything."
Grandma's eyes narrowed. "Why would she be signing anything?"
Mom ended the call.
Desmond immediately checked county property records. Five months earlier, a quitclaim deed had been filed involving a small rental property Grandma had placed in trust for me when I was eighteen. I had almost forgotten the property existed because Mom told me Grandma had sold it years earlier. She hadn't. The property was currently worth nearly $420,000. And someone had attempted to transfer it into a company named Hollow Creek Holdings.
Owner: Marcus Delgado.
Grandma lowered herself into a chair. Desmond continued reading. "The transfer failed because the trust requires Renee's notarized consent."
I whispered, "I never signed anything."
He turned his laptop toward me. A notarized signature appeared on the document. Mine. Except I had never seen that paperwork before.
Then Grandma noticed the date. "That was the week Naomi was born."
I remembered signing hospital documents after an emergency C-section. Marcus had stood beside my hospital bed holding a stack of paperwork. He told me everything about insurance.
Desmond immediately contacted the trust administrator. While he was speaking, someone began pounding on Grandma's front door.
Marcus's voice came through the glass. "Renee! Open up!"
Naomi started crying. Grandma stood. Then Marcus shouted something that made Desmond stop speaking.

"You already signed the house over! You can't undo it!"
Desmond slowly lowered his phone. "He just confirmed he knows about the disputed transfer."
