Chapter 7 - The Driver's Confession

One question was still nagging at me. Who had actually sent those flowers?
Outside, the older man was waiting by Preston's car.
"I can run you all home," he said.
It was the same man I'd seen watching the girls from behind the wheel that afternoon.
Halfway back to the house, he finally spoke.
"My name's Frank. I sent the flowers. Nora asked me to."
The girls went dead quiet.
Frank kept his eyes on the road.
"I worked for Preston's father back in those days. Nora came to that office more times than Preston will ever admit to. Some days he'd see her for five minutes. Some days he wouldn't even come down to the lobby. I drove her home more than once, sitting in the back seat trying not to cry in front of me."
His voice snagged.
"After she got sick, she handed me that letter. Made me promise I'd send it if Preston ever went looking for those girls on his own."
"So when he told you to drive him to our house..." I said.
Frank nodded once.
"I knew it was time."
I pulled Claire in against my side. In the back seat the other three leaned into each other, worn out.

Ten years after Nora asked me to raise her daughters, she'd kept one last promise of her own.
She'd made sure that when their father finally showed up at the door, her girls would already know exactly who he was.
