Chapter 2 - The Footage

For a long moment nobody at that table breathed.

Adam angled the phone toward me first.

The video showed the front desk of the dealership, filmed from a camera up near the ceiling. Time stamp from the previous afternoon. And there they were — my mother in her good church blazer, my sister beside her, a manila folder open on the counter between them.

I watched my mother slide a sheet of paper across to the salesman. I watched Vanessa lean in and tap her finger next to a line at the bottom.

The signature line.

My signature was on it.

Except I had never touched that page in my life.

The salesman, it turned out, had gotten a bad feeling. The MDX hadn't even been officially handed over yet — Adam's dad, Gary, had set the whole thing up as a wedding surprise, and the paperwork clearly listed me as the person receiving the vehicle. So when a woman who wasn't me showed up wanting to sign it straight over to a third person, he stalled, carried the folder off to "make copies," and called the number on the buyer's file.

That number belonged to Adam.

Adam had told him one thing: do not process anything, and save everything.

I lowered the phone and looked at my mother.

"You forged my name."

"It was not like that," she said instantly. Too fast.

Gary had come up behind Adam's chair by then, quiet, arms loose at his sides.

"Then say what it was like, Diane," he said. "We're all listening."

My mother's eyes went around the patio. I think that was the exact second she understood how many people had stopped their conversations to watch.

Vanessa jumped in to save her.

"Mom was just trying to make things simpler for everyone. Rachel doesn't need a forty-thousand-dollar SUV. She works at a clinic, for God's sake."

"Whether she needs it has nothing to do with it," Adam said. His voice never went up. That was somehow worse. "It was a gift. To my wife. From my parents."

My mother's chin came up.

"Vanessa has two kids to haul around. Rachel doesn't have any. Family helps family. That's how I raised both of you."

And there it was. The sentence. The one I'd been hearing since I was nine years old.

When Vanessa dropped out of school, I was the one who handed over my graduation money. When she couldn't make rent, my mother called me in tears until I covered it. When Vanessa ignored a dashboard warning light for six months and blew up her own engine, somehow that became a bill I was supposed to help pay too.

I turned to my sister.

"Did you know she signed my name?"

Vanessa hesitated.

Just a second. Maybe less.

But I saw it.

"I knew she was handling the paperwork," she said.

Something in my stomach dropped straight through the floor.

Adam picked his phone back up.

"The dealership kept the original form and the video," he said. "My father's lawyer told us to hold on to all of it. So we did."

My mother stared at him.

"A lawyer. You brought a lawyer into my daughter's wedding."

"You brought a forged document into it first," Gary said.

She lowered her voice and tried a softer angle. "Adam. Sweetheart. This is a family misunderstanding. That's all this is."

"No," I said.

She looked at me.

"It's fraud, Mom. That's the actual word for it."

She stared at me like I was the one who had done something unforgivable.

"You would sit there at your own wedding and call the police on your own mother? Over a car?"

I thought about every single time the word family had been used like a crowbar to pry something out of my hands.

"I didn't call anyone," I said.

Adam's face changed. He glanced past me, toward the doors at the edge of the patio.

Two police officers were standing there with the venue coordinator, talking low.

My mother followed my eyes. Her voice came out as a whisper.

"What did you do?"

"I didn't do anything," Adam said. "The dealership reported the forged transfer this morning. On their own."

May you like

One of the officers started walking toward our table.

And for the first time in my whole life, my mother had run completely out of people to blame.
