Chapter 1 - The 6:20 Call

After Three Sons, My Husband Handed Me a Newborn Girl and Swore She Was Ours — Then a Doctor Closed His Office Door Behind Us

After my third son was born, I folded up the little pink blanket I'd bought years before and pushed it to the bottom of a storage box.
I loved my boys. Every loud, muddy, wonderful one of them.
But Mark, my husband, knew I'd spent my whole life quietly wanting a daughter.
Then, seventeen years later, my phone rang at 6:20 in the morning.
Mark was at Mercy General.
"Get here as fast as you can," he said. "And don't bring the boys."
When I got there, he was standing in the hallway outside the maternity ward. In his arms was a newborn girl, wrapped tight in a hospital blanket.
I stopped walking.
"Mark... whose baby is that?"
His eyes filled.
"Ours."
He stepped forward and settled her into my arms. Dark hair. Fingers no bigger than matchsticks. And gray eyes, the softest gray I'd ever seen.
I started to cry.
Mark kissed the top of my head.
"Her name is Clara."
Nothing about it made sense. Before I could get a single question out, a man in a white coat came down the hall toward us.
"Mrs. Bennett? I need to speak with you alone."
Mark went rigid beside me.
"That's not necessary."
The doctor didn't even glance at him.
Inside his office, he shut the door behind us.
"Did your husband tell you how Clara came to be here?"
"No."
Something in his face shifted.
He slid a folder across the desk.
Inside was a DNA report. I saw Mark's name near the top.
Probability of paternity: 0%.
I looked up.
"Then why would he tell me she's ours?"
The doctor turned the page.
There was a second result. This one had my name on it.
I made myself read it.
Probability of biological relationship: 99.8%.
My hands went numb.
"That's impossible. I'm 54."
"I know."
"Then who is her mother?"
May you like
The doctor opened his mouth.
Before he could say a word, someone started pounding on the office door.
