Chapter 2 - The Name on the Screen

I pushed myself upright, ignoring the pull of the stitches. "Adam. What's wrong?"
Nothing.
He kept staring at that little mark — a dark shape with a curve to it, almost like a sliver of moon.
"Adam." It came out harder than I wanted. "You're scaring me."
He lifted his head. His eyes were wet, but not the way they had been ten minutes ago. That had been joy. This was something with no name I wanted to say out loud.
"Where did she get this?" he asked.
"Where did she — Adam, she's thirty minutes old. She came out of my body. She was born with it."
He nodded, but his jaw was locked tight. Without a word he handed our daughter back to the nurse and walked to the window.
I watched his back. His shoulders were shaking.
"Adam. Talk to me. Now."
He turned around, and the look on his face stopped me cold.
"My brother has that exact mark," he said. "Same shape. Same spot. Same shoulder."
The room went dead silent.

Then his phone lit up and buzzed against the bedside table. He looked at it and went completely still.
It was his brother's name on the screen.
